Throwing ballast overboard

As soon as there was some peace and quiet after landing on the museum grounds in Speyer, the colleagues got to work: the submarine was made lighter so that it could pass the next sections of the route.

To do this, 100 tons of batteries were removed from the boat and the engines were fixed in place.

This was no easy task: each of the 140 batteries weighs around 720 kilograms and had to be lifted from the basement of the submarine through a small loading hatch in the front section.

The last battery was removed in August. U17 was finally more than 100 tons lighter. Preparations for the shooting test continued ...
