Dear museum members, friends, and fans,

an eventful year lies behind us. Over 50 events—from thrilling events and exciting lectures to impressive guided tours—made 2025 a very special year for the Technik Museen Sinsheim Speyer.

Among the absolute highlights were the opening of our U-boat U17 to visitors, BRAZZELTAG, the SWR Summer Festival, the US Car, the Science Fiction Meeting, and the Big Motorcycle Weekend. Another unforgettable moment was the world premiere of the film “U17 – Die 500 Tonnen Reise” (U17 – The 500-Ton Journey) at the IMAX Cinema in Sinsheim. The audience's applause was an emotional thank you to everyone who witnessed this historic transport. Have you seen the documentary yet? I can highly recommend it.

What can we expect in the coming year? 2026 will be a big anniversary year for us: The Technik Museum Speyer will celebrate 35 years, and the Technik Museum Sinsheim will celebrate an impressive 45 years. We are celebrating these two milestones with pride, but above all with an eye to the future.

We want to make our museums even more informative and keep the stories behind the exhibits alive. In doing so, we will focus even more on the association behind it all. Because without you—our members, supporters, and friends—this success would not be possible. You have made our museums what they are today: places of encounter, enthusiasm, and shared passion for technology.

#forfansbyfans: Together into the future – this is the motto under which we want to continue promoting a sense of togetherness. We want to make the personal stories of our members and exhibits even more tangible – as a living bridge between the past, present, and future.

Before you dive into our detailed review of 2025, I would like to express my sincere thanks to our dedicated members, friends, and donors, as well as our employees, who have shaped this year with their commitment, creativity, and enthusiasm.

Thank you for being part of this community and passing on your enthusiasm for technology to future generations. I wish you a dynamic start to the new year – full of energy, inspiration, and joy in what connects us all.

Your Museum President
Hermann Layher

With breathtaking 3D images, the film shows not only the beauty but also the vulnerability of this unique habitat, making a visit to the cinema an impressive experience combining natural wonders and climate awareness.

Patrick Boudry
CNES astronaut visits Speyer

At the end of March, we welcomed a special guest to Speyer: French astronaut Patrick Baudry. In the packed FORUM cinema, he took visitors on a fascinating journey into space and gave an impressive account of his mission aboard the space shuttle Discovery in 1985. With personal experiences, impressive facts, and his charismatic manner, Baudry thrilled the audience—especially the young space fans, who were then able to have their picture taken with him.

Just a few days after the launch of Antarctica in Sinsheim, the impressive documentary “A Beautiful Planet” premiered at the IMAX DOME cinema in Speyer. Projected onto the huge dome, it creates an immersive film experience that permanently changes the way we view our planet. “A Beautiful Planet” is shown daily at 11:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the IMAX DOME cinema at the Technik Museum Speyer.

On April 11, 2026, this exchange will enter its 52nd round.

Speyer Model Building Days
... A must-see event at Easter!

The Speyer Model Building Days once again attracted numerous visitors to Speyer this Easter. Guests of all ages were amazed by the detailed locomotives, airplanes, vehicles, and spaceships on display. Children's eyes lit up in particular when the miniature trains steamed past or when they were able to assemble a small model kit themselves. In a family-friendly atmosphere, members of the Association for the Promotion of Aviation History in the Palatinate presented their elaborately designed models and shared their enthusiasm with visitors. It was a lovingly organized event that brought craftsmanship, precision, and community to life—and will continue as usual next year at Easter.

Salon Diplomatique
Remembrance, exchange, and understanding beneath the Concorde

After the Salon Diplomatique Mannheim met in Speyer last year, we had the pleasure of welcoming this distinguished group to the Technik Museum Sinsheim in May 2025. The occasion for the evening was a festive charity gala in aid of a new memorial in Tulle, France. It was an evening that touched everyone deeply: Museum President Hermann Layher welcomed the guests, including diplomats and representatives from politics, business, and culture. Together, they sent a strong signal of Franco-German friendship and supported this important project of remembrance culture.

We were particularly delighted by the visit of top French diplomat Pierre Lévy, who signed the Golden Book of the City of Sinsheim, and by the moving words of contemporary witness Roland Gonieau. Museum President Hermann Layher, Salon President Helmut Augustin, and Honorary Consul Folker Zöller made it clear: remembrance is important, but reconciliation is the goal.

A huge thank you goes to our Sinsheim catering team: from the perfect organization in advance to the warm service and the excellent menu from the museum kitchen, everything came from a single source. The fact that this demanding evening went so smoothly and atmospherically was solely thanks to the dedicated performance of our team.

An evening that shows that our museums are not just halls full of technology, but places where community and history are truly brought to life.

BRAZZEL DAY
Technology festival at full throttle

In May 2025, BRAZZELTAG once again transformed the Technik Museum Speyer into a mecca for technology fans. Over 21,000 visitors experienced a festival of superlatives, which this year was all about the dragster scene. With Gerd Habermann's fiery school bus, the comeback of “Dragster Mary” and Europe's fastest woman, Jndia Erbacher, who provided goose bump moments with her 11,000 hp Top Fuel Dragster, the event offered spectacular highlights.

In addition to high speed, the Brazzel course presented living technical history with giants of displacement and magnificent classics. Stunt shows by Chris Rid and Adrian Guggemos, the post-apocalyptic Wasteland Area, and exclusive insights into the U9 submarine and the Transall C 160 rounded off the diverse program. A special accent was set on Sunday: for Mother's Day, there was something to be won for the mothers in attendance: sightseeing flights or rides.

The highlight was the grand finale on Sunday evening. When over 110,000 horsepower were ignited simultaneously and all motorized participants started together, the thunder could be felt throughout the entire grounds – a powerful conclusion to a weekend full of technical passion.

On May 9 and 10, 2026, we will rock the museum again for its anniversary.

Submarine U17
Now it's time to open the hatches!

After a spectacular journey across Germany, the moment had finally arrived: at the end of May, we opened the hatches of our U-boat U17. Two years of intensive preparation lay behind us and our numerous supporters when museum president Hermann Layher officially unveiled the new exhibit on May 22 together with guests of honor and companions. Among the guests were Prof. Dr. Stephan Harbarth, President of the Federal Constitutional Court, Sinsheim's Mayor Marco Siesing, and retired Captain Michael Setzer from the Association of German Submariners.

When the hatches were opened to the public the following weekend, the enthusiasm was enormous. Meter-long queues formed at the turnstile, as many visitors had been eagerly awaiting this moment for months. With visible fascination, they climbed through the narrow corridors, looked at the technical equipment, and immersed themselves in the underwater world. Many paused for a moment to imagine what it was like to be on a diving mission for weeks in the confines of the boat – without daylight, with limited space and clear procedures.

A special highlight: former submariners and members of the Association of German Submariners stood right next to the exhibit, answering questions, explaining the technology, and recounting impressive anecdotes from their everyday service. Their stories of camaraderie, discipline, and the fascination of life underwater brought history to life.

For many visitors, their first tour of the 48-meter-long, 350-ton submarine was a spine-tingling moment – not only because of the impressive technology, but also because of the unique experience. The functioning periscope allows visitors to spot the Tupolev Tu-144, while the torpedo tube and the faithful reproduction of the controls impressively demonstrate the care and dedication that went into preparing the exhibit.

With the opening of U17, we have achieved another milestone. The submarine adds an extraordinary piece of naval history to the collection and symbolizes the connection between technology, craftsmanship, and human experience. U17 is not just an exhibit – it is a place where history comes alive.

Classic car tour organized by the Friends Association
Classic cars, winding roads, and culinary delights

This year, the Förderverein's classic car tour started at the Technik Museum Sinsheim. With gleaming cars and cheerful teams, the route first led through the Kraichgau region with its thousand hills into the Rhine valley to Bruchsal-Büchenau – including a stylish lunch break at the Ritter restaurant. On the way back via Philippsburg, St. Leon-Rot, and past idyllic vineyards, it was all about driving pleasure, enjoyment, and, of course, good conversation over coffee and cake at the museum.

In 2026, the classic car tour will start in Speyer... let's see where the participants end up then.

Germany's first aircraft carrier restaurant
FLIGHT DECK

Following the successful opening of our underwater exhibit, the U17 submarine, we returned to the surface just a few weeks later. We opened our new restaurant in Sinsheim – the FLIGHT DECK. On June 6, 2025, the official announcement was made: “Ready for takeoff!”

Beneath legendary aviation icons such as the Concorde and the Ju 52, visitors can now enjoy burgers, snacks, and milkshakes in a genuine aircraft carrier atmosphere. A stylized runway leads directly into the restaurant, while technical details, a huge mural, and lamps made from old pilot helmets create the perfect deck feeling.

With the FLIGHT DECK, we are responding to the growing number of visitors and offering a new restaurant experience at the same time. Our catering team spent months refining the concept, the menu, and the furnishings – with the result: a place where enthusiasm for technology and enjoyment go hand in hand. The FLIGHT DECK is open 365 days a year and is open to all guests – whether they are visiting the museum or not. Anyone with a valid day ticket for the museum or the IMAX cinema also receives attractive price advantages.

International Museum Ship Radio Weekend
U17 goes on air

Just a few days after the grand opening of our U-boat U17, the first event featuring the new exhibit took place: the International Museum Ship Radio Weekend. On June 7 and 8, 2025, visitors were able to watch, participate, or simply listen in on the mobile radio room right next to U17 as radio operators made contact around the globe, from Antarctica to Australia to St. Petersburg.

Organized by the German Amateur Radio Club (DARC) e.V. and the Association of German Submariners, the weekend brought maritime communication within reach. Morse code, radio communication, and shop talk created a real seafaring atmosphere. It was an all-around successful event that impressively demonstrated how alive the history of technology can be. And in 2026, it will be “CQ Museum” again: on June 6 and 7, radio waves will once more be sent out into the world.

Kawasaki Days
The museum grounds were green again ...

Hot temperatures, loud engines, and a great atmosphere—Kawasaki Days 2025 was once again a real highlight. Around 5,500 visitors came to the site in Speyer to experience two days full of action, shows, and pure motorcycle excitement.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Kawasaki Germany, the event hangar offered exciting insights into the brand's history – with old cult machines, interviews, and racing legend Toni Mang, who was busy signing autographs. Outside, stunt shows, freestyle acts, dragsters, and steep wall riders provided pure adrenaline. Anyone who wanted to could get on a bike themselves: 220 test rides, a motorcycle simulator, and a quad bike course for children made the event an experience for young and old alike.

And, of course, there was the big prize draw. Two lucky visitors were delighted to win brand-new Kawasakis.

Historic agricultural machinery gathering
... amid shiny metal, oily hands, and lots of diesel talk.

n June, the outdoor grounds in Sinsheim became a paradise for fans of historic agricultural technology. At the historic agricultural machinery meet, lovingly restored tractors and tow trucks provided plenty of excitement and a great atmosphere. Rides on the rattling Lanz tractors were particularly popular, while the Little Giant A2 locomobile caused amazement with its hissing steam during its round-trip demonstrations. Despite changeable weather, neither exhibitors nor visitors let it dampen their good mood.

Internationale Deutsche Schnauferl-Rallye
125 Years ASC, 125 Classic Cars

At the end of June, the Technik Museum Sinsheim served as both the start and finish point of the 68th International German Schnauferl Rally. Those familiar with the club know that it brings together some of the rarest vintage cars around. Fittingly, in the 125th anniversary year of the Allgemeiner Schnauferl-Club, 125 teams took to the starting line with vehicles that in some cases are more than a century old.

The range of automotive treasures spanned from single-cylinder veterans with just three horsepower to elegant classics from the 1970s and 1980s. Rarities such as a 1903 Richard-Brasier Hornet Spécial or a 1907 REO Model B drew particular attention.

The route led through the Kraichgau, the Palatinate and the southern Odenwald, featuring a symbolic stop at the world’s first filling station in Wiesloch, where the historic “refuelling like in Bertha Benz’s time” was lovingly re-enacted.

Over the course of the two days, numerous spectators gathered on the museum grounds to experience these motorised rarities up close.

SWR Summer Festival
Almost 40,000 visitors to the city of the Salian kings

At the SWR Summer Festival 2025, our museum grounds in Speyer were all about music. Fans celebrated exuberantly in glorious weather. Three evenings featured three different genres of music and plenty of excitement: Alle Farben kicked things off, getting the audience dancing with his beats and hits. On Saturday, Gringo Mayer, Wolf Maahn, and The Hooters created a real festival atmosphere with their rousing rock sound. Helge Schneider and the SWR Big Band brought the festival to a close with humor, jazz, and spontaneous improvisation, providing plenty of laughs and a musical highlight.

In total, the summer festival attracted over 39,000 visitors to Speyer. During the day, guests enjoyed the festival mile around the cathedral with the ARD Family Day, live broadcasts, and hands-on activities for young and old. In the evening, there was dancing, singing, and exuberant celebrations beneath the Boeing 747.

The Fascination of Tuning
The Meeting

On June 29, Sinsheim was the scene of a meeting between VW and Opel – with plenty of horsepower, enthusiasm, and good cheer. Numerous tuned treasures gathered beneath the Concorde and U-boat U17 as part of our current special exhibition, “The Fascination of Tuning – VW vs. Opel.” Under the June sun, paintwork gleamed, rims sparkled, and everywhere people were talking shop, laughing, and marveling.

The former rivals of the road, the VW Golf and the Opel Kadett, stood peacefully side by side, while on stage, moderated vehicle presentations and exciting stories from the proud owners generated enthusiasm. The meeting was not only a celebration for tuning fans, but also a real community experience – by fans, for fans.

On June 20, 2026, the next round will begin with “Fascination Tuning – The Meeting 2.0” ...

ADAC Heidelberg Historic
The Kraichgau region in rally fever

With the finish line crossed on Saturday evening, the 29th ADAC Heidelberg Historic came to a festive conclusion at the Technik Museum Sinsheim. The starting signal was given here on Thursday, before around 180 classic cars set off on their 510-kilometer tour through northern Baden – accompanied by cheering spectators, glorious weather, and the smell of gasoline in the air.

It is a special honor for us every year to host the start and finish of this important rally and to be part of this rolling journey through automotive history. After a weekend full of engine sounds, excitement, and shiny chrome, we are already looking forward to 2026, when the ADAC Heidelberg Historic will celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Charles “Sam” Gemar
NASA astronaut visits the Technik Museum Speyer

In the summer, we had a special visitor in Speyer: NASA astronaut Charles “Sam” Gemar took visitors on a journey into the world of space travel. During his lecture at the FORUM cinema, he not only talked about his three space shuttle missions aboard Atlantis, Discovery, and Columbia, but also about the magic that can only be experienced in space.

His lecture offered fascinating insights into the everyday life of an astronaut and the challenges of space travel. The young visitors were particularly delighted when they had the opportunity to have their picture taken with the astronaut afterwards.

2. D.O.C. Days
They Ride as One ...

The Ducati Official Clubs celebrated their 25th anniversary – and this special sense of community was palpable throughout the grounds in Sinsheim. Over a thousand Ducati fans from all over Germany and neighboring countries arrived under the motto “WE RIDE AS ONE” to celebrate their passion for the “Red from Bologna” together. Anyone who wanted to could have their bike checked on site. There was tinkering, measuring, and testing: at the chassis service, on the performance test bench, or on the popular wheelie simulator, where a real racing feeling came to life.

Another anniversary is already looming on the horizon: in 2026, Ducati will celebrate 100 years...

In 2025, the Sinsheim Ostalgie Meeting celebrated its tenth anniversary. Around 100 vehicles from the former Eastern Bloc rolled onto the grounds – from rattling Trabants to powerful Tatra V8s. At the museum grounds, people talked shop, marvelled and laughed a lot, impressed by the diversity of Eastern European vehicle construction.

Only a quickly approaching summer storm brought the meeting to an early end. But one thing is certain: it will continue on 4 July 2026. That's when the eleventh edition of the popular meeting will kick off, full of the smell of two-stroke engines, stories and genuine East German nostalgia.

US-Car Treffen
A weekend full of horsepower, rock “n” roll and camaraderie

Early on Saturday morning, that distinctive sound was already in the air: the deep rumble of American engines. Over 700 American cars rolled onto the grounds in Sinsheim (some came from France, England, the Netherlands and Switzerland) and transformed it into a paradise for fans of chrome, V8 power and unmistakable style. Whether perfectly restored classic cars, shiny lowriders or powerful pickups, each vehicle told its own story.

The supporting programme offered everything that makes the heart of a true US car fan beat faster: rousing live music from rock “n” roll to country, exciting awards ceremonies with special vehicles, a dealer mile with spare parts, accessories and fan merchandise, and street food in all variations. The new military area directly next to the U17 submarine was a particular talking point and provided a spectacular backdrop for historic US military vehicles.

Even a few rain showers over the site did nothing to dampen the mood. The visitors stayed, laughed, danced and enjoyed the day in the best of company. The weekend came to an end with an evening barbecue and chill-out session featuring atmospheric music, delicious food, good conversation and a relaxed atmosphere.

On 1 and 2 August 2026, it will be time to start your engines again and welcome to Sinsheim.

25 years of STS-99 / Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM)
Anniversary event in Speyer

On 9 August 2025, everything at the Technik Museum Speyer revolved around space travel: 25 years of STS-99 – the mission that re-measured the Earth. The large hall in the FORUM cinema was filled to capacity as four members of the six-person STS-99 crew – NASA astronauts Kevin Kregel, Dominic Gorie, Dr Janet Kavandi and ESA astronaut Dr Gerhard Thiele – looked back on their time together in space and reported on the scientific significance and course of this extraordinary mission.

Dr Mamoru Mohri, an astronaut with the Japanese space agency NASDA, who was part of the historic mission alongside his colleagues, also joined via video message. They recounted how they used state-of-the-art technology to re-map the Earth's profile – a real milestone, because before this mission, Mars was actually better mapped than our own planet.

Jannicke Mikkelsen, Dragon Vehicle CDR of the FRAM2 mission, the first Norwegian astronaut and also the first Norwegian citizen in space, generated particular enthusiasm. She spoke about her connection to the STS-99 mission and shared personal thoughts on its significance for today's space research.

Between exciting facts, fascinating images and many personal stories, there was a palpable sense of fascination in the room. The young visitors in particular were delighted to have the opportunity to meet the astronauts in person and take a souvenir photo – an evening that is sure to remain in many people's memories for a long time to come.

JACATU XVI
Tuning, team spirit, speed

At the end of August, Speyer was once again in a state of emergency – JDM style! At JACATU 2025, the Japanese tuning scene gathered at the Technik Museum Speyer, and what happened here was simply a pure celebration of car love. Over 750 cars, from old Datsuns to wildly modified Supras, gleamed in the sun, engines roared, and everywhere people were tinkering, marvelling and celebrating.

Between car limbo, exhaust contests, cosplay and after-show parties, the weekend was filled to the brim with good vibes and scene spirit. Even a brief rain shower couldn't slow anyone down. And because it was so good, one thing is already certain: on 29 and 30 August 2026, it will continue – with JACATU XVII.

3rd Cupra Tribe Meeting
Beats, Power, People

On 6 September, the CUPRA community gathered at the Technik Museum Sinsheim for the third CUPRA Tribe meeting in perfect late summer weather. Organised by regional car dealership Kobia, around 300 vehicles gathered on the museum grounds, accompanied by DJ music, a tattoo artist and a relaxed atmosphere. Among the visitors was former Formula E driver Daniel Abt, who mingled with the fans and added to the excitement.

Museums & Friends
Tuning Edition

One week after the JACATU event in Speyer, the cross-brand tuning scene gathered in Sinsheim for ‘Museum & Friends – Tuning Edition’. On 7 September, around 300 vehicles transformed the outdoor area into a colourful showcase of individual vehicle art. Between the Concorde, Tupolev and U-boat U17, elaborately refined show cars, creative conversions and lovingly maintained classics gleamed.

The event took place as part of the current special exhibition ‘Fascination Tuning – VW vs. Opel’, but was deliberately open to all facets of the scene. Whether subtle factory refinements, elaborate complete conversions or spectacular show cars – every form of passion was welcome here.

Accompanied by casual petrolhead chats, exciting vehicle presentations and TechTalks with Denis Marasciulo and André Thiele provided expert knowledge, entertainment and plenty of scene atmosphere. This was a meeting that showed how diverse and vibrant tuning culture is today.

Flugtag Sinsheim
A weekend when earth and sky come together

As good neighbours, we were of course present at the Sinsheim Air Show in September – and in two ways: with two of our legendary Lanz Bulldogs, we provided the smell of diesel, amazed faces and exciting tours of the grounds.

Historic commercial vehicle meet-up
Amidst the smell of diesel, technical discussions and shiny bonnets ...

... In September, together with the South German Truck Veterans Association, we put some really heavy equipment in the spotlight: the 3rd Historic Commercial Vehicle Meeting in Sinsheim was all about trucks, buses and classic commercial vehicles from over 100 years of automotive history. More than 180 oldies weighing several tonnes rolled in from all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland: from early wooden flatbed trucks to the striking front-wheel drive vehicles of the 1980s.

Chrome, paintwork and passion gleamed beneath the Concorde, Tupolev and U17 submarine. Visitors were able to marvel at legendary brands such as Magirus, Henschel and Büssing and even experience historic fire brigade turntable ladders up close. The Daimler Trucks Classics special area was particularly popular: here, visitors could ride in historic trucks and test drive the all-electric Mercedes-Benz eActros. This created an exciting bridge between the past and the future.

A special treat awaited participants on Saturday: Frieder Saam, one of the minds behind the spectacular transport of our U-boat U17, gave an impressive account of the logistics behind this logistical masterpiece, complete with exciting details and lots of background stories.

Science Fiction Convention
A weekend among galaxies, heroes and childhood dreams

On the last weekend in September, anything was possible again in Speyer – and we mean anything: during the Science Fiction Convention, the Technik Museum Speyer was transformed into a galactic meeting place for over 17,000 visitors. Stormtroopers, superheroes, elves and androids mingled among aeroplanes, submarines and the BURAN space glider.

Thousands of cosplayers provided amazement and selfie moments: whether it was lightsaber training with the Saber Project, autographs from Darth Vader or the big parade of fandoms, pure enthusiasm was everywhere. Children were greeted by R2-D2, while adults enjoyed reuniting with their childhood heroes.

The weather was perfect, allowing shows, photo shoots and workshops to take place throughout the museum grounds. Fandoms and retailers presented themselves in the space hall and Hangar 10, while burgers, bubble tea and black soft ice cream tempted visitors outside.

The Science Fiction Convention has once again shown why it has long enjoyed cult status: it connects generations, galaxies and a wealth of passion for fantasy and technology.

The countdown is on: on 26 and 27 September 2026, the intergalactic event will return to Speyer. Advance ticket sales are already underway.

The big motorbike weekend
Classic motorbikes, Vespa acrobatics and a steep wall show

On the first weekend in October, everything in Sinsheim revolved around pure riding pleasure on two wheels. Hundreds of bikers, mechanics and fans gathered for the big motorcycle weekend to bring the season to a fitting close. The whole diversity of the two-wheeled world was on display, from gleaming classics and powerful Harleys to elegant BMWs and iconic mopeds.

The event kicked off on Friday with the traditional motorcycle ride organised by MOC Steinsberg, before the museum grounds themselves became the scene's meeting place over the weekend. There, extraordinary machines were lined up side by side: for example, a Laverda SFC 1000, the brand's last model – almost 40 years old, 97 per cent in its original condition and completely unrestored – or a 1959 Giulietta, which is still ridden by its first owner. The legendary Hildebrand & Wolfmüller from Munich, the world's first series-production motorcycle, was also on display.

The ‘Lucky Daredevils’ provided thrills with their spectacular steep wall show, accompanied musically by the punk band Periot, who provided the appropriate soundtrack in the middle of the steep wall. The Oldtimer Vespafreunde München thrilled the audience with daring Vespa acrobatics, and on stage Andy Schwietzer and Horst Nordmann hosted exciting presentations and the popular award ceremony for special machines.

Despite occasional rain showers, the atmosphere remained fantastic: the audience, motorcycles and presenters quickly moved into the event hall, where the awards ceremony and demonstrations continued, while the steep wall show simply went on outside.

On 3 and 4 October 2026, we invite you once again to the motorcycle meet in Sinsheim.

World premiere
Drone cleans our Concorde

The year 2025 marked a real turning point for our museums in terms of maintaining our large exhibits. The excitement in Sinsheim was particularly palpable in October when we witnessed our queen of the skies, the Concorde, being cleaned for the first time not by human hands in a work basket, but by state-of-the-art drone technology. It was fascinating to observe the precision with which the aircraft from KTV Working Drone cleaned the striking white outer skin of the supersonic legend.

We had already conducted tests in Speyer in the spring, when the Boeing 747 and the Dassault Mercure were cleaned of weather marks as part of the world's first drone cleaning of aircraft. This project now reached its climax in Sinsheim. After initial test runs in September, the team returned in October to complete the mammoth project. It was impressive for spectators to see how the drones reached even the most difficult areas, such as the undersides of the wings or the complex engine housings, with an ease that previously required a head for heights and crane work with centimetre precision.

We owe the success of this campaign to the strength of our community: a member of our support association established the contact, demonstrating the value of our network of over 7,000 technology enthusiasts worldwide. In addition to saving time and significantly increasing safety for our employees, the process also set new standards in terms of sustainability. The ‘PowerCleaner’ used was fully electric and utilised a pure water system, which allowed us to reduce the use of chemicals to an absolute minimum. For us, the campaign was a complete success and an important step into the future – a gentle, efficient and, above all, safe method of making our legends shine for future generations.

Submarine U9 guided tour
A weekend with real depth

On 12 and 13 October, visitors to the Technik Museum Speyer literally went underwater – on guided tours of the U9 submarine. Former submariners from the Association of German Submariners (VDU) were guests and provided fascinating insights into their time underwater.

Between the engine room, galley and control centre, they recounted what life on board was really like: from sleeping in cramped bunks to the smell of diesel and metal to the camaraderie of the crew in the depths. In addition to exciting stories, the experienced ‘sea dogs’ also explained the technology of the 46-metre-long exhibit, which is now one of the museum's most popular highlights.

The German Navy's information vehicle was also on site, offering visitors additional insights into the modern work and technology of the German Armed Forces underwater.

Guided tour of the rescue cruiser
50 years of John T. Essberger

On 18 October 2025, we celebrated a special anniversary: 50 years of the John T. Essberger rescue cruiser. Together with the DGzRS and former crew members, the day became an impressive blend of technology, emotion and history.

Throughout the day, former sea rescuers recounted their missions, guided visitors through the ship and started the powerful engines every hour. The shanty choir created a genuine seafaring atmosphere, while maritime collectibles, model ships and a limited edition art print rounded off the anniversary celebrations.

Premiere of U17 transport documentary
Impressive transport, impressive images

A special highlight in the 2025 event calendar was 22 October, when the documentary film ‘U17 – Die 500 Tonnen Reise’ (U17 – The 500-Ton Journey) celebrated its world premiere to great acclaim at the IMAX cinema in Sinsheim. The 45-minute production by Heilbronn-based filmmakers HNYWOOD documents the spectacular two-year journey of our 50-metre-long submarine from Kiel to its new home in Kraichgau. The team achieved a challenging visual balancing act: since the unique transport could not be re-enacted, every scene had to be captured perfectly at the first attempt, in a format that would look impressive both on classic 16:9 screens and on the enormous IMAX screen.

Beyond the purely technical documentation of this logistical masterpiece, the film captures above all the human side of this project. It shows the sweat and toil of the preparations, the tension during night-time crossings of the North Sea, and the deep emotional bond between the project managers, technicians and former crew members. Accompanied by a specially composed, powerful soundtrack, the fascination of the spectators on the sidelines is just as palpable as the immense feat of strength of those involved. After final technical processing by the IMAX Corporation in Los Angeles, the work is now shown daily in the regular programme in state-of-the-art 4K laser projection and 12-channel surround sound. This ensures that the journey of the U17 remains alive for museum visitors not only as a historical event, but also as an immersive cinema experience.

Take advantage of the demonstrations held several times a day as the ideal start to your museum visit. After experiencing first-hand from your cinema seat how the 500-tonne steel beast was manoeuvred through the narrowest locks, you can view the original directly on our premises. Climb aboard and inspect the fascinating technology inside the U17. This will bring the spectacular transport history to life for you.

State award for the Auto-Technik-Museum e. V.
We have been recognised as a volunteer-friendly employer.

At the end of October 2025, we were honoured by the state of Baden-Württemberg as a ‘Volunteer-Friendly Employer in Civil Protection’. This award is a special recognition of our support for voluntary work. We were nominated by the Sinsheim Volunteer Fire Brigade and are delighted to receive this award, as it represents our entire team. Many of our employees volunteer in their free time, for example with the fire brigade or the Federal Agency for Technical Relief. We naturally encourage this commitment and are very proud of it.

Big things are happening
Special redesign in the Liller Hall

At the Technik Museum Speyer, we achieved something great together with the STRABAG trainees: our historic ‘Faun’ road-rail vehicle from the 1930s has been given a new home – complete with a newly built eight-metre-long section of track.

STRABAG provided the materials and expertise, our museum team lent a hand, and in just one day, we created a display that brings the vehicle's original use back to life.

A big thank you to the STRABAG trainees and their trainers for their fantastic cooperation!

When history meets diplomacy
US Consul General visits Sinsheim

On this day, we had a special visitor at the Technik Museum Sinsheim: Brian Heath, US Consul General at the US Consulate General in Frankfurt, was our guest. Together with our museum president Hermann Layher, he took a tour of the exhibition – with many exciting conversations about technology, history and the enthusiasm that connects us all.

Winter Model Building Days
Technology on the smallest scale

Just in time for the pre-Christmas season, it wasn't just the stars that were twinkling in Speyer's Raumfahrthalle: on 15 and 16 November, the Winter Model Building Days brought back childhood memories for visitors. Strolling among the huge exhibits, visitors discovered a miniature world created with incredible attention to detail.

More than 20 exhibitors presented their treasures – from classic model railways, which made their rounds through winter landscapes as in the past, to colourfully illuminated ‘Christmas cars’. You could really feel the passion of the model builders from VFLP e. V. as the young visitors stood in awe in front of the display cases. An event that perfectly demonstrated that technology is fascinating even on the smallest scale.

On 14 and 15 November 2026, our space hall will once again be transformed into a winter wonderland.

Congratulations
to the participants of the certificate course ‘Expert in Young and Oldtimer Technology’

In mid-November, we had some special visitors in Sinsheim: participants in the certificate course ‘Expert in Young and Oldtimer Technology’ at HfWU Nürtingen spent their final day with us – including a ceremonial presentation of certificates.

As a partner of the course, we are delighted that they shared this special moment with us. The programme included a guided tour of the museum, a look under the bonnet of the Ideal, a short drive in a 1923 Ford Model T and many impressions from the world of historic vehicle technology.

We would like to congratulate everyone on their graduation.

Maintenance work on U17
Full commitment to our steel colossus

We were at the side of the U17 team when they worked together with our workshop crew to ensure that their ‘old home’ remained in top technical condition six months after opening in Sinsheim.

Christmas is a time for smiling faces
From visits from Father Christmas to the Lanz tour

Together with the ‘Strahlende Kinderaugen’ initiative, we were able to experience a special Christmas event today. Father Christmas and the Christ Child brought lots of presents for the children. There were many small and big moments full of joy.

In addition to a raffle and a painting competition with great prizes, there were Lanz tours, food and drinks, and a visit to an IMAX documentary for each child and their parents.

Campaigns such as Strahlende Kinderaugen show what is possible when many people take on a small piece of responsibility and turn it into a shared experience, especially at Christmas time.
