We say goodbye to
Gotthard Arnold
While we were transporting our U17 submarine to Sinsheim, we received the sad news of the death of Gotthard Arnold, one of the most important master organ builders and experts in mechanical music. Arnold, born in Saxony in 1937, died on 22 July 2024 at the age of 87.
After fleeing East Germany with nothing but a rucksack and a bicycle, his life took him to West Germany, where he began his career. Originally trained as a carpenter, he later specialised in organ building and the restoration of mechanical musical instruments. From small music boxes to large dance organs, he breathed new life into countless instruments.
Arnold's extraordinary talent for combining technology and music made him a central figure in mechanical music and an indispensable partner of the Technik Museen Sinsheim Speyer. For over four decades, he left his mark on our collections and exhibitions. His greatest successes included the restoration of the Welte Philharmonic Grand Organ and the organisation of concerts such as the Welte Concert, the Christmas Concert and the barrel organ serenade.
With his colourful hand-knitted hat, Arnold was not only an expert, but also a valued conversation partner and inspiring personality. We are deeply indebted to him and will honour his life's work. Gotthard Arnold's legacy lives on in the world of mechanical music - in every new sound created by his hands.
